"Is Immigration at Its Limit? Not for Employers"

    For this week's blog, I chose to write about a New York Times article written by Patricia Cohen. In this article, Cohen explains why employers in Miami rely so heavily on immigrants to help make their businesses grow. In the past decade, South Florida has seen a huge stream of immigrants come in more than most American cities. Employers have always relied on this, but they have found that they need more people (immigrants) to fill positions in their businesses. Although there is a steady stream of immigrants coming into South Florida, employers from several industries in different states argue that they need more immigrants to help their businesses function. Cohen notes that economists believe immigrants make the country richer. I found this article to be very enlightening because many people in the US argue that immigrants “‘steal” jobs from native-born citizens. In reality, immigrants are needed to help with business growth and help the economy.

     For this week's blog post I decided to focus on a CNN article written by Zahra Ullah. In this article she describes how a man is accused of building a fake border crossing in order to trick and out migrants. He has been detained by Russian authorities.       The suspect created a fake frontier near Russia's border with Finland and deceived four people who thought they were being smuggled into the European Union. According to Russian state news agency TASS, the migrants are reportedly from South Asia and have been arrested. The suspect is a former Soviet republic country, and installed makeshift signs and posts in a forest in the Leningrad region to trick migrants that they were crossing into the European Union. He reportedly charged each migrants 11,000 to help them cross into Finland. When the conman took the migrants to Leningrad's Vyborg District , where he set up the fake border, all of them were stopped and detained by Russian border guards.       A St. P

Xenophobia in South Africa

For this week's blog post I decided to focus on a New York Times Article written by Julie Turkewitz. This article talks about the recent anti-immigrant protests in South Africa. Many South African citizens have turned to violent protests aimed at targeting Nigerian’s living in South Africa. These violent protests have led to at least 10 deaths. In light of these recent protests, the Nigerian government has announced that they will be conducting voluntary evacuations for all Nigerians living in South Africa. Many citizens and governments across the continent are denouncing what they call “xenophobia” in South Africa. Unfortunately, this will also affect the African Continental Free Trade Area. African leaders were scheduled to meet this week in Cape Town to talk about the agreement but Nigeria’s government has pulled out of the meeting due to the violent attacks against their citizens in South Africa.
